Becoming a Follower of Jesus

Why would you want to be Follower of Jesus?  Well, how much do you know about what Jesus actually said or did?  At times I ask Christians, "Tell me something that Jesus said that causes you to believe in Him."  Most Christians are hard pressed to actually recite accurately and in the cultural and historical context any specific teaching or event in Jesus' life.  If you're going to trust Jesus with your life now and your spiritual life for eternity, you personally need to know not just what Jesus said but why he said it, who was he speaking to, and what were the cultural dynamics 2,000 years ago  to help you understand the teaching.

The Jesus you probably know is the Jesus defined and described by your friends, the media, and the "Institutional church".  Wouldn't it be insulting and ridiculous if someone judged you or criticized you based solely upon someone else's opinion of you?  Of course it would!  Give Jesus the same consideration.  Please evaluate your personal knowledge of Jesus and the basis for your beliefs about him.

I encourage you to read about what Jesus said and did.  I suggest you begin with the account of Jesus' life written by John, a fisherman who's life found meaning and renewal by knowing Jesus.  Other men and women had their lives restored by Jesus' love and message.  Their events of their lives and Jesus' message in found in their writings - the scriptures we have today. These writings are first hand accounts of what Jesus did and said.  As you read about Jesus, keep in mind His humanity and what physical, emotional, and social realities Jesus and his first Followers faced during their journey.

Something else about Jesus that's important, the spiritual and supernatural factor.  I trust my friends and my family, but I also know they're human just like me.  This means that we will fail each other at times as we let our emotional and selfish nature overcome our best intentions and occasionally cause one another hurt and pain.

So why should I trust Jesus with my life if he was just a guy like me and you?  The Tribe of Jesus follows Jesus because we actually believe who Jesus said that he was.  Please take the time to read about the following event in Jesus' life and what he said:

It was now winter, and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah.  He was at the Temple, walking through the section known as Solomon's Colonnade.  The Jewish leaders surrounded him and asked, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly."  Jesus replied, "I have already told you, and you don't believe me. The proof is what I do in the name of my Father. But you don't believe me because you are not part of my flock.  My sheep recognize my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. So no one can take them from me.  The Father and I are one."  Once again the Jewish leaders picked up stones to kill him.  Jesus said, "At my Father's direction I have done many things to help the people. For which one of these good deeds are you killing me?"  They replied, "Not for any good work, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, have made yourself God."  Jesus replied, ... "Why do you call it blasphemy when the Holy One who was sent into the world by the Father says, `I am the Son of God'?  Don't believe me unless I carry out my Father's work.  But if I do his work, believe in what I have done, even if you don't believe me. Then you will realize that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father."   (Found in the writings of John the Apostle in Chapter 10 verses 22-38.)

Jesus did claim to be the one and only Messiah, the Son of God, God in the flesh.
